Interior Painting With No-Mess: It Can Be Done

Interior painting is one of the messier do it yourself tasks that homeowners can participate in. Paint is inexpensive and doing the work yourself makes painting the inside of your home an affordable project. The key to painting the inside of your home with little to no mess lies in preparation and patience. If you keep those two things in mind, it is possible to paint the interior of your home neatly.

Taking the mess free approach to painting your home may seem like a waste of time, but nothing could be further from the truth. Taking more time to prepare to paint, and being more patient during the painting process can save you a lot of time cleaning up. Even if you do not mind cleaning up, paint can sometimes be difficult to remove from certain surfaces. Even a washable paint may stain some materials, leaving you with a permanent reminder of your haste. By taking your time, you can prevent a mess from happening and you save time by not having to clean up any paint.

Use these tips for a mess free solution to painting your home.

• Prepare. Before you begin painting, take time to invest in preparation. All of the furniture in the room should be removed or covered with drop cloths. If you are leaving furniture in the room, take the time to remove any knick-knacks that are on the furniture. While it may seem like a waste of time, you can concentrate on painting much better if you are not worried about precious knick-knacks while you are stretching and reaching.

• Dedicate an outfit to your painting. By wearing an older set of clothes and tying your hair away from your face, you can concentrate on your work and not on damaging your wardrobe. Stick a rag in your pocket for easy access when you need to clean up messes.

• Gather all of your materials together. Before you begin painting, you should take the time to have everything that you may need to paint the room. This includes paint, extra cloths, brushes, and clean-up material.

• Do not rush. Interior painting is not a job that you should take on when you are in a hurry. Devoting time to this project pays dividends later on. Taking your time guarantees a smooth, long lasting paint job. If you try to hurry though the project, you may encounter several problems. When the paint dries, you are likely to notice streaks and spots from your hurried application. In addition, when you hurry, you are much more likely to make a mess. An important key to mess free interior painting is taking your time.

• Clean up immediately. This means cleaning a section at a time. If you dribble paint, wipe it up immediately. If there is paint running down the outside of your can, stop and clean it up. Wet paint is much easier to clean than dry paint.
Even following these tips may not be enough to keep you painting mess free. If so, it may be time to look at your technique. There are certain methods of painting that are more conducive to neatness than others. Foam and cloth rollers often provide neater applications than traditional paintbrushes. They are neater in several ways. The foam and cloth both absorb some of the paint, preventing it from dripping off the applicator or running down the handle. They also dispense the paint in a thinner layer. This thin layer dries quicker and is less likely to run.
Another way that you can improve your technique for mess free painting is to slow down.

Covering the area that you want to paint with slow, deliberate strokes provides even coverage and prevents areas with too much or too little paint from showing up. Slowing down also gives you a chance to notice any spills or runs before they dry.

The final way to improve your technique for mess free painting is to improve your access. Have a sturdy ladder that you can use when painting up high. Do not rely on a rickety footstool or a box. Get as much of the furniture out of the room as possible. Although it may seem like a hassle to move the furniture in and out of the room, having it out of the way allows you to work with less stretching and bending, which makes the painting project much neater.

Interior painting does not have to be a messy proposition. If you take your time, invest in the proper tools, and clean up all messes promptly, painting the inside of your home can be a mess free project. Remember to take your time because hurrying can only lead to a mess, which can take much longer to clean up. Moving slowly can help save time.

painting a inside wall to look like bricks?

Ok so I want to paint the inside of my living room to look like it is bricks. Does anyone know how to do that and do i need any special tools. Just wondering. Thank you.

You can buy stencils that look like bricks, but it is easy to make them, too. Just take a large piece of mylar or plastic. (I actually found the very inexpensive thin, plastic cutting boards from the discounters hold up very well with the continuous use they will get.) Use a utility or craft knife and cut out a brick shape to the size you want. (I found you can get 2 on the cutting board.) Make the outline of it a little uneven like a worn brick so that the edges aren’t completely straight. I prefer to use acrylic glazes in 3 colors for the bricks and 2 colors for the “grout” lines. For mine, I used some orange based red, creamy white and smokey gray to give the appearance of used brick, but you can use any combo you like. I used the same smokey gray and a lighter gray for the grout. By using glazes, you give yourself more open time to manipulate the paint colors before it dries. To make glaze yourself, mix 1/3 acyrlic paint, 1/3 water and 1/3 Floetrol (found in the paint aisle at the home improvement center). You can buy already made glazes but they are more expensive and you won’t have the color choice that you can make. I mix mine in recycled butter or dairy tubs because they have lids which means you can store them overnight if you don’t finish in one day. Once I have my glazes mixed, I pour out the 3 brick colors on one plate. I dampen a regular sponge (they work better on brick look than the sea sponges) and practice on a piece of matte or poster board with the stencil blue taped on. That way, you can see how the colors work together, how much color saturation you want and how heavy a hand to use to accomplish it. Once you have what you want, blue tape the brick to the wall and block in the color. I like having the 2 bricks on one stencil because the grout lines stay pretty even. Do all of the bricks first and let it dry. Add in any other color or make corrections when it is dry because the colors will change with the direction of the light source through the day. Then mix up the grout glaze, pour the colors on another plate, get a brush and freehand in the grout color.
